In a display of sheer determination, strategic finesse, and athletic vigour, Comet Shipping Agencies etched its name in maritime sports history, claiming the coveted 14th Ships & Ports Maritime Cup title by defeating the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) 2-1.

The tension-laden final, held at the Stable Sports Complex, Surulere, Lagos, captivated a record-breaking crowd as fans from across the maritime sector gathered to witness the ultimate showdown between two of the industry’s finest teams.

The rousing victory, driven by a mix of grit and sportsmanship, crowned Comet Shipping Agencies as champions of the Maritime Cup Competition for the first time, marking a remarkable ascent from underdog status to champions.

From the first whistle, both Comet Shipping Agencies and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council vied relentlessly for supremacy, the match proving every bit the thriller it was promised to be. Comet’s Aminu Usman electrified the field by opening the score in the 17th minute, as he expertly found the net to give his team an early lead. The atmosphere was charged with intensity as NSC fought back, with Rashid Ajadi equalising in the 33rd minute, sending the match into halftime at a 1-1 deadlock.

The second half resumed with heightened fervour. While both sides demonstrated impressive offensive prowess, the NSC strikers struggled to convert opportunities, repeatedly thwarted by Comet’s defensive wall. Then, at the 56th minute, Richard Onyema of Comet Shipping emerged as the team’s hero, delivering a thunderous goal that tipped the scales in favour of his side. Despite NSC’s persistent efforts to level the game once more, Comet’s defence remained unyielding, securing their 2-1 lead until the final whistle.

A Journey Through the Stars: Comet’s Rise to Victory

The journey to the crown was anything but smooth sailing for Comet Shipping Agencies. Their campaign began in Group B, where, despite a 1-2 opening loss to none other than their final rivals, NSC, they quickly recalibrated and mounted an impressive comeback.

A decisive 3-0 victory over APM Terminals Apapa on October 21 showcased their potential, and their unyielding resilience was further evident in a gruelling 1-1 draw with Nigeria Customs Service, the five-time champions, on October 25. Securing a spot in the quarter-finals as the best-loser, Comet seized their opportunity to prove their mettle.

The quarter-final clash saw Comet defy expectations against former champions Micura Services, clinching a 5-2 victory after an electrifying penalty shootout. Their march to the finals continued with an authoritative 3-1 win over the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), a semi-final triumph that underscored their synergy, endurance, and unrelenting pursuit of victory.

As the maritime world looked on, Comet Shipping Agencies rose like a comet streaking across the night sky, dazzling with every match and defying every odds. In the finale, they exacted a fitting revenge over NSC, completing a narrative arc that few could have predicted.
