As the 14th edition of the Ships & Ports Maritime Cup Competition barrels towards its semi-final stage, the city of Lagos pulses with the echoes of triumph and fierce determination.
With the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) already through, the recent victories of Nigerian Ports Authority’s (NPA) Dantsoho Jets and Comet Shipping Agencies set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable semi-final showdown.
The tournament, which has held the maritime sector spellbound since its inception on October 15, 2024, has transformed the iconic NPA Sports Complex and Stable Sports Complex into arenas of electrifying competition, high drama, and unparalleled sportsmanship.
The defending champions, NPA’s Dantsoho Jets, demonstrated yet again why they hold the maritime title in such high esteem. Under the searing afternoon sun at the NPA Sports Complex, they clinched a 3-2 victory over a tenacious Dangote Ports Operations team in a match that proved as dazzling as it was nail-biting.
In a rare and exhilarating display, all five goals rained down in the first half, with each team throwing their heart and soul into every minute. Shadrach Charles opened the scoring for NPA in the 12th minute, igniting a series of relentless attacks. Barely six minutes later, Jesse Kpakol extended the lead to 2-0, painting a picture of what seemed to be an unstoppable NPA advance.
Yet, Dangote Ports Operations was not about to retreat quietly. Their tenacity paid off as Ogbuka Chinaza found an opening to score a powerful, crowd-thrilling goal, reigniting their hopes.
The momentum continued to build, and in the 33rd minute, Dangote’s top striker Abulrahman Isa scored an equaliser that sent ripples of excitement through the stadium.
However, fate tilted the scales in NPA’s favour when Dangote’s defender Lugard Igbega inadvertently turned the tide, scoring an own goal in the 39th minute. With this stroke of luck, NPA’s Dantsoho Jets clung to their slender lead for the remainder of the match, narrowly edging out Dangote Ports and affirming their place in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, over at the Stable Sports Complex, the fourth quarter-final match brought yet another thrilling spectacle as 2010 champions Micura Stevedoring Services clashed with Comet Shipping Agencies in what many expected to be an even contest. Yet the underdog Comet stormed ahead, pulling off a stunning 5-2 victory to secure a historic place in the semi-finals.
This impressive scoreline not only underscored Comet’s tactical prowess but marked their inaugural semi-final appearance in the tournament’s fifteen-year history, an achievement that has quickly become a defining moment of the competition.
With all four semi-finalists confirmed, maritime sports fans are now on tenterhooks, eagerly awaiting the upcoming fixtures on November 4, 2024.
The first semi-final match will see NSC face off against the defending champions, NPA’s Dantsoho Jets, at 1 p.m. in a clash that has already been dubbed “The Battle of the Titans.”
At 3 p.m., the newly ascended Comet Shipping Agencies will challenge NIWA, who has proven itself a formidable contender throughout the tournament.
Both matches will take place at the Stable Sports Complex, where spectators are expected to flood the stands in support of their teams.
Speaking on the fierce competition and camaraderie showcased so far in this year’s tournament, the CEO of Ships & Ports, Dr Bolaji Akinola, who is widely credited for promoting the growth of the industry’s sporting culture, commented, “This year’s Maritime Cup has truly embodied the spirit of unity and excellence that drives our industry forward. To witness such skill and determination on the field from all teams is inspiring and a testament to the commitment and resilience inherent in maritime professionals. We are thrilled for the semi-finals and look forward to seeing who will rise to the top.”
As the countdown to the semi-final stage begins, one thing is certain: the path to maritime glory is paved with resilience, strategy, and a relentless pursuit of victory. With NSC, NIWA, NPA, and Comet Shipping all vying for the crown, the 14th Ships & Ports Maritime Cup is poised to conclude in a crescendo worthy of its legacy.
